Who is given snoring prosthesis?

Snoring prosthesis is given to patients with snoring and sleep apnoea. If we summarise snoring and sleep apnoea briefly;

Snoring is the sound that occurs as a result of breathing in a narrow area during sleep. The narrowed respiratory tract is caused by pathologies in the nose, nasal passages, soft palate, small tongue, tongue root or any part of the trachea. Snoring is an important problem that affects the health and social life of the person. In the beginning due to decreased sleep quality, fatigue, drowsiness, decreased work efficiency develop during the day, and if left untreated, it can cause much more important health problems with sleep apnoea in the future. It may cause social problems as sleep quality deteriorates.

If the person's breathing does not stop or sleep is not interrupted during sleep, this type of snoring is considered as simple snoring. This type of snoring does not disturb the person. However, due to the noise generated, relatives are disturbed by this situation. People with simple snoring usually consult a physician with the insistence of their relatives.

Sleep apnoea; Sleep apnoea is when breathing stops for at least 10 seconds during sleep and then respiration is activated again in the form of severe snoring. In some cases, this period may be longer. Seconds after the respiratory arrest, the brain stimulates the body. Afterwards, the person changes his/her position and continues to breathe with a severe snoring. Sleep apnoea is seen in 2-4% of the society. It is more common in men than in women. The incidence of sleep apnoea is 1/4 in men and 1/10 in women.

How do snoring prostheses treat snoring and sleep apnoea?

Intraoral snoring prostheses are especially effective by bringing the lower jaw forward and relieving the compressed tongue root and trachea entrance. It is especially effective in patients with a receding lower jaw (genioglatti) or a small lower jaw (microganatti).

How are intraoral snoring prostheses applied?

When deciding on a snoring prosthesis

Ear, nose and throat examination should be performed

Radiological imaging CT, MRI

Polysomnography (sleep test) if necessary

Planning should be done after it is made.

Snoring prostheses are made by taking separate measurements for the lower and upper jaw of the patient who is applied individually. The general principle is to bring the lower jaw forward.

It should be personalised (everyone's jaw and tooth structure is different like fingerprints)

Easy to put on and take off

Must be soft material

It is important not to strain the jaw joint too much (jaw joint pain passes within the first 2/3)

Should not impede the movement of the mouth forwards and to the sides

Intraoral snoring prosthesis is a highly effective treatment method used especially in recent years, which can save patients from surgery or CPAP mask use.
